The Mind’s Natural Resting Place (7 one-hour sessions)
Start Date: Thursday, 1/26/23
Exploring what it means to be happy, joyful and at ease through an understanding of Jhana.
This class will give you 7+ definitions of what Jhana is, and will include teachings from the ancient suttas, contemporary teachers and my practice.
Jhana refers to immensely beautiful, joyful states of being that can be accessed through meditation and open-heartedness. Many practitioners define Jhana in ways that hinder their progress. For example, difficulty and doubt can be woven into how one defines subconsciously Jhana, i.e. “Jhana is an incredibly deep state of bliss that advanced meditators or monks achieve when they are close to enlightenment.” Some people even define Jhana as “pleasurable states that meditators can get attached to, thus preventing Nibbana or awakening.” It is absolutely critical to get the framework right–this course is about holding a view of Jhana that is nuanced, helpful and open-minded.
This class is not just about philosophy; it’s about practice and direct personal experience. You will encounter some surprising ways to understand what these beautiful realms of treasure and bliss actually are, and this will bring you a new way to relate to your mind, mental phenomena like thoughts and emotions, and the world!
